Back: Fishball hor fun soup (with fish noodles), left: dry hor with fish cakes with minced pork, front: Curry Fish Noodle Soup, with the obligatory chilli (sambal) paste, very nice, very very nice indeed.

Grilled pork dumplings (Guo tie). A definite recommendation.

Overwhelmingly mediocre, 2/5, I'll defintely not be eating here again (unless the restaurants on the other side of the road are closed and I am desperate, then I might go for another dish from the Special Plate Rice stall or, more likely, the claypot rice stall...

Bak Kwa / Rou Gan; Chinatown, Petaling Street, KL, Malaysia

Of all the food available in Malaysia, Bak Kwa (Hokkien) is probably my favorite. It is delicious, moist, sweet, flat squares of roast pork or chicken which, are perfect eaten hot by themselves or in a sandwich, possibly with a tiny amount of pork or chicken floss. It is Bak Kwa in Hokkien, or Rou4 Gan1 肉干, literally Meat Dry, although possibly a better translation would be Barbecued Meat.

Directions... Enter the pedestrianised part of Petaling Street from Jalan Sultan, walking past thousands of stalls, then when you get to a cross roads (with stalls roasting chestnuts) turn right and the Bak Kwa Stall is on your left.

Char Kway Teow; Station Kotitiam, South City Plaza, Seri Kembangan, KL, Malaysia

Char Kway Teow with Mango Ice (cream?), the raw slices of chilli were an interesting touch... as was the unexpected company (below). All in all, the food was ok, but I certainly will not be going back anytime soon as there are much nicer, non-air conditioned places outside South City Plaza.

The unexpected visitor... not the most appetizing condiment.

All the staff watching cartoons, I cannot help but wonder if they spent less time watching cartoons and more time cleaning whether there would be cockroaches milling about the place.

Not recommended.

Roast Duck Rice; Kedai Kopi & Makanan Mooi Mooi, Happy Garden, KL, Malaysia

Delicious roast duck and roast pork and garlic rice with (singapore) chilli sauce from one of the permenent hawker stalls in the restaurant. The meat is not there very early - possibly need to wait until sometime after 11am. Definitely highly recommended.

Garlic (rice) is technically (although its not used) suan4 tou2 (fan) 蒜头(饭)


Not much to look at, but the Roast duck and roast pork is definitely worth it.

The restaurant is opposite the temple of the four faced Buddha in Happy Garden, KL, usually open everyday except monday - its the yellow place marker on the map.

Roast Chicken Rice; Restoran Hoe Fong Chicken Rice, Sea Park, PJ, Malaysia

This place serves delicious roast chicken rice with a wonderful chilli sauce (recently found in the local Chinese supermarket in England as Yeo's Singapore Chilli sauce for hainanese chicken rice). Perfect and simple, roast chicken and rice 5/5. Mouthwatering delicious - I am salivating at the thought!

Where the magic happens...

This place is not air conditioned, but the food is fantastic enough that its not important. Truly local food, I will at some point add the chinese/mandarin/cantonese for the dishes...

Definitely one to revisit! Food was great, 5/5. Absolutely delicious chicken and prawn dumpling soup. Visited several times - latest 28/12/08.

Uncle Nasi Lemak - Chinese Version

At Sea Park, most mornings, from about 7am onwards, there is a little mini-market of delicious foods! Tucked away on the right hand side is "uncle" nasi lemak, a Chinese version of the popular Malaysian (spicy) breakfast food.

The master in action... The nasi lemak was accompanied by a cold can of (ice) jasmine tea - a perfect combination.

Chinese Nasi Lemak - Coconut Rice with potatoes, boiled egg, peanuts, crispy fried (unsalted) anchovies, cucumber slices and Pork Curry. Absolutely delicious take away 5/5.

Definitely one to visit again! Delicious Hainanese (steamed) chicken rice where Selegie Road meets Middle Road (Singapore). Visited 23/12/08, Absolutely delicious...
